KATHRYN JANEWAY AS MENTOR

KATHRYN JANEWAY AND CHAKOTAY+ INGENUITY

Kathryn Janeway Early Life

Kathryn Janeway was born on Earth, her mother Gretchen is a mathematician and her father Edward is a Starfleet design Engineer, she also has a sister called Phoebe. At four year of age it was very apparent she excelled in maths. Kathryn spends a lot of her early life trying to earn her fathers approval , She was raised in an agricultural community, her family ate real food not replicated. Kathryn and her sister were sent to a liberal creative school, and not the Starfleet academy.

She rebels against her parents Traditional leanings, only when she is older does she understand the lessons this kind of upbringing has taught her. When she was older her fathers work with the Cardassian's  meant he would spend a lot of time away from home. She is to young to understand and she worries that he isn’t proud of her achievements, this pushes her harder to gain her fathers approval. He was unaware she seeks this and his work consumes his time. When in was forth grade her father take’s her on a space flight to the Mars Colony this is the trip that gives her the thirst for space exploration.

When 14 on her second visit to the Colony she and her friend go to a forbidden quarry to swim and dive. She is forced to save both of their young lives, but instead of feeling scared she found the whole experience exhilarating . Kathryn's courage and stamina will serve her well in the years to come.

During Kathryn’s first assignment she falls in love with Lt Justin Tighe after he rescues her from a Cardassian  prison. During their escape from the Cardassian patrols her quick thinking saves them both from being discovered . This action leads to Admiral Paris who is her commanding officer on board the USS Icarus to recommend she pursue a command position. meanwhile she plans to marry Justin.

When disaster strikes her down. Kathryn, Justin and her father are testing a prototype ship, in the Tau Ceti system when it crashes, thrown clear of the wreckage she tries in vane to save her father and her fiance, but to no avail this causes her tremendous grief. And only the love of her mother and sister can pull her though this ordeal. Recovering slowly she returns to Starfleet, taking post graduate training for command.

It is at this time in her life she meets Mark Hobbes Johnson she knew him in her child hood, and he had grown up into an appealing soft spoken man who specialised in philosophy through this relationship Kathryn is able to heal the wounds of her past. She is very confident of her leadership abilities, looking forward to each new challenge with curiosity and intelligence. Her life experience prepared her well for she becomes one of the most admired captains in Starfleet Command.

Mentor

Janeway strives to be a good example to her crew. She is dedicated to Starfleet’s principles of exploration and first contact. And always puts her crew ahead of herself. She is a humanitarian and rarely compromises her principles, even when it means stranding Voyager and its crew 70000 light years from home.

The first of Janeway's  success stories among her officers is Thomas Eugene Paris, a man whose life is in a mess when the captain first meets him. Paris is imprisoned at the Federation penal facility in New Zealand, Earth, for working with the Maquis resistance movement. Paris is given the opportunity to redeem himself with an observing role on Voyager's mission to find a Maquis ship. His presence is unwelcomed by some of Voyager's officers, because of his earlier dishonourable discharge from Starfleet for covering up his responsibility for three deaths. Janeway, believes Paris can be redeemed, and gives him a field commission as helmsman after some of the crew are killed in a turbulent passage to the Delta Quadrant. He performs his new duties diligently and under Janeway's guidance, becomes a valuable officer. The captain relies on Paris in many hazardous situations.

Ensign Harry Kim exceeds all of Janeways expectations. He is the most junior officer on her staff and Voyager is his first assignment. The captain feels responsible for all her crew. Kim's feelings toward the captain are that he thinks of Janeway as a role model and mentor.

Lt. B'Elanna Torres is more challenging . When she is forced to become part of Voyager's crew after serving on a Maquis ship she is angry and isolated, and refuses to recognise the Starfleet command system. Janeway sees the potential in Torres,  and gets used to the temperament of the  half Klingon woman as they work together on solutions to problems. She feels the former Maquis can be fashioned into a strong officer. She never loses her moods, but the captain's faith in promoting her to chief engineer is repaid by the excellent job she does. Later Torres would say that Janeway saw something worthwhile in her and had faith in her, which helped her to have faith in herself.

Kes, the very young  Ocampan who joins the Voyager crew at the start of their long journey back to Earth, is almost a daughter to Janeway. She visits the captain for advice on whether she should conceive a child, and turns to her when the two most important people in her life Tuvok and Neelix - are taken from her Janeway offers her emotional support. and is there at the end of her life on Voyager, when Kes transforms into a higher plane of existence

Janeway takes it upon herself to help Seven's return to humanity and individuality after 20 years in the Borg collective. She tells Seven that she is now part of Voyager's human collective; they may be individuals, but they work together for a common goal. Janeway is prepared to do anything she can to help Seven, physically, emotionally, and ethically. She also gently persuades Seven to read the personal logs from her parents' ill-fated mission aboard the U.S.S. Raven . The captain eventually  succeeds with Seven when she is trusted with sole command of Voyager during its passage through a lethal nebula.  She is both a role model and a friend to her crew.

Kathryn Janeway and Chakotay + Ingenuity

Captain Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager and her first officer, Commander Chakotay, are forced to remain behind on a planet because of an insect bite that has infected them with a deadly virus. They agree that, since no apparent cure exists for their condition, Voyager should continue on its mission to return to the Alpha Quadrant while they stay behind. Once reality sets in, each of them handles their isolation differently, leading to a deepening of their friendship. Janeway, works tirelessly to find a cure. Chakotay, on the other hand, accepts the fact that this will most likely be their home for the rest of their lives, and sets about making their environment more comfortable.

He builds a bathtub for Janeway to relax in, and a headboard so she can sit up in bed to read. He describes his attitude not as being defeatist, but rather accepting of their situation. As time passes, Janeway finds merit and a certain peace in his view.

Being the only humans on the planet, leads to some intimate moments between the two officers. The captain tells Chakotay to call her Kathryn. He is initially uncomfortable with this, but soon gets used to it. It takes time, but he eventually reveals that his feelings for her run much deeper than a working relationship, beyond mere friendship. As Chakotay massages the tired muscles in Kathryn's shoulders one night, both sense that a new intimacy is developing between them. Chakotay opens his heart to the woman he loves. He speaks of an ancient legend about an angry warrior who lives in conflict with the rest of his tribe and cannot find peace. A female warrior, asks him to join her tribe and help them, he discovers that fighting beside her, making her burden lighter, brings him a long sought after peace. There was no legend but he found it easier to express his feelings for Kathryn this way.

Voyager returns with a cure for them and they resume command. It is business as usual between the captain and her first officer - but the intimacy between them does resurface from time to time. Janeway's single-minded attitude sometimes places a strain on her friendship with her first officer. On one occasion, Chakotay replicates a pocket watch for her birthday, but Janeway initially rejects the gift as a waste of resources in their war with the Krenim Imperium, he is deeply hurt. After Chakotay is captured by the enemy, however, she comes to greatly value this watch, showing the depth of her feelings.

Ingenuity

Great Starfleet captains must have the ability to think or sink and come up with solutions to seemingly impossible problems. Being lost in the Delta Quadrant, brings new experiences never before encountered, More than ever Captain Janeway's inventiveness is her most valuable tool for getting home.

She is a trained scientist, and is always seeking approaches others might not consider. She also pursues artistic endeavours outside of work; testing her powers of originality during her personal time sharpens her skills for when she is on duty. She finds tale's of romance and mystery a pleasant diversion from her duties as captain. She like to share time with her ongoing simulation of the inventive genius Leonardo da Vinci. Janeway enjoys the opportunity to spend her free time in the presence, the greatest creative minds in Earth's history.

When Chakotay  and her are forced to remain on a planet after being infected by insect bites, she refuses to believe that her ingenuity and skills can't get them out of this bind. She tries to trap the insect so she can analyse it; when this fails, she learns about the evolution of the planet's ecosystem. She even looks for a clue in the animals on the planet reasoning that they must contend with insect bites, nothing works. This is one of the few times when Janeway's creativity  doesn't save her, though fortunately the help of the Vidiian Danara Pel does.

In perhaps the most daring display of her seeking unusual solutions to problems in the Delta Quadrant, Janeway decides to make an alliance with the Borg. She's puzzled over how to pass through Borg space safely in the holodeck, away from the pressures of everyday life.  The holographic da Vinci suggests she pray to God for an answer. Instead, Janeway decides to make a pact with the devil - the Borg. Chakotay is very much against the idea and has a very angry row over this subject. But a bold gamble that fortunately for her and her crew, pays off .
