Miles Edward O’Brien Born in Ireland, Earth in September 2328 . His father Michael and his mother and two brothers lived a happy peaceful life. Miles was at one with nature and would quite literally not hurt a fly. He had a small dog for a while. His education records were not that good he was in the lower third of his class and scored very low in mechanical aptitude. He used to give some teachers a hard time with his attitude.
At home however he built subspace transceivers and ships
inside bottles. He loved his mothers home cooking and she refused to use
replicators in preparation of the families food. Miles too likes to cook
traditional Irish meals like Potato casserole, mutton shanks with cabbage. A simple man is Miles and when preparing these family dishes it reminds him of the
mother he loved so dearly.
Many of his friends enlisted as officers, but Miles chose the none commissioned officer this meant he was not trained and groomed for higher ranks, he would have to train on the job and use his experiences to allow him to work his way up through the years. This takes a lot of hard work and aptitude. As a young crew man he was assigned to USS Rutledge, under the command of captain Benjamin Maxwell. This part of his career has lasting impact on his life. Captain Maxwell influenced the young man. He was a powerful intelligent man who inspired Miles and all of the crew.
Events during the Cardassian war would deeply effect O’Brien. In particularly the attack on Setlik III outpost in 2347.
A squad of Cardassians
thinking it was a staging post for an invasion, mounted a surprise raid killing
over one hundred people including Miles’s best friend Will Cable. He used to
like to sing with him on board ship, his nick name was Stompy. Captain Maxwell also lost all of his family during this raid.
O’Briens First experience with transporters came at about this point. The Rutledge responds to a distress call. He has to repair a bulky field transporter to prevent himself and thirteen Starfleet personnel form being taken prisoner. He witnessed a lot of death and destruction and this was the period he learned with a passion to mistrust Cardassians. This he would never really come to grips with. The Cardassians were responsible for miles loosing his innocence, O’Brien was protecting a group of women and children, two Cardassians soldiers burst in, and during the following battle a woman threw a phaser to Miles, he fired incinerating the enemy before his eyes the weapon was set on maximum. This gentle man hated the Cardassians because they had forced him to kill another being.
Now promoted to tactical officer on the Rutledge Captain Maxwell always spoke
highly of O’Brien and his remarkable ability to size up a problem and come up
with an answer. He would always say he learned a lot from his captain. In his
new position he his knowledge of engineering expanded hugely., Giving him a vast
experience that would stand him in good stead for his life to come. After the
war with the Cardassians Miles finally had the time to come to grips from the
horror he had seen at Setlik III and the terrible things he had to do and the
remorse that went with it all.
Guinan is from El-Arian she is believed to be over 480 years old. Her father is believed to be 700. Her duty on the USS Enterprise NCC- 1701-D is bar tender to the personnel, and she is a wonderful listener to the many crew that come into Ten forward for relaxation from duty. Her life span has given her untold knowledge. Her advice is usually sort after by many members of the crew including Captain Picard who has a very close relationship with Guinan.
Picard found that Guinan had a perception that goes beyond
human understanding. also that she has the ability to understand what really
motivates people , she can sense changes in the time line, and when something
is "different". In some cases she knows what will happen in parallel
time lines. Guinan is not sure how she knows these things only that she has
this ability.
As a child she had a unusual pet a Tarkassian razor beast believed to be quite terrifying when they smiled, Guinan got along well with it. She also got on well with her maternal uncle Terkim he was the "family misfit" according to her the only one in the family with a sense of humour, she shares her uncles dislike of "fitting in" and doing the expected.
During earth date 1893 , she seems to have had some disagreement with her family she is living on Earth as Madame Guinan an active member of high society, she was a friend of the renowned author Samuel Clemens, who wrote under the name of Mark Twain. She attended literary meetings, and was very interested in earths literary culture. She wears the costume of this era. But her choice of dress is the one worn on the Enterprise the hat and long flowing garment.
It was while living in San Francisco she first meets Captain
Picard and the Enterprise senior crew after they are forced to return to the
past to find Data, here they come across the Devidians who travel through time
and prey on sick humans long before the development of advanced technology. She
helps the crew but in the caves where the Dividians are hiding Guinan is
injured. Putting himself at grave risk Picard stays with the injured Guinan.
Showing the depth of which his feelings for her are. When they meet again in
the 24th century Guinan never tells her friends about this meeting. Always
aware of protecting the time line.
Guinan was married it seems at least once. She has several children, her long life span enables her to be an expert at many skills, among them are fencing, and phaser sport. She meets "Q" in 2165 and they become enemies. However she is the first to admit that not all the Q Continuum are bad. She also tries very hard to help Data understand humour she tells him jokes but he just doesn’t grasp it, she is very patient with his development.
Guinan is not on her home planet when the Borg attack and assimilate most of her people in 2265 only a small group of the El-Arian people survive this ordeal. Guinan is deeply scarred , and has a lasting hatred of the Borg. In 2293 Guinan and other survivors are being transported on two ships when they get dragged into a deadly Phenomenon an energy ribbon, this is a doorway to another place called the "Nexus" this is a place where a persons innermost desires are fulfilled, she describes this later to Picard as a place that was like being wrapped up inside joy. She is not there long, but she found it difficult to forget such a place of joy. There is an "echo" of herself still in the Nexus.
One of her great secrets is her relation ship with Picard at
some time she is helped by him, she was in trouble and
he came to her aid, the
two of them are very close friends. Picard learns to trust Guinan absolutely,
and he places a great deal of trust in her gifted insight and judgement. It
seems she spends some time on the Stargazer with Picard, and then later he
recruits her onto the Enterprise as the bartender in ten forward, her quarters
are so different to Starfleet personnel, she likes heavy drapes and her love of
dimmed candles is evident.
Guinan board‘s the Enterprise at Nestoriel III everyone of course is curious about her and gossip is rife. She goes about her daily business and ignores all the speculation. The crew are soon drawn to her serenity and she becomes a friend to most of the them. It would be impossible to imaging there lives without her now. A woman of deep feelings, sensitive to the needs of others and a great friend.
Guinan serves on the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D as Ten-Forward's civilian bartender
she has an innate capacity to listen to others, and her long lifespan has given her a wealth of experience; on the Enterprise her advice has proven invaluable to many of the crew. She also has a very close relationship with Captain Picard, who has found that she is very
perceptive and has a rare ability to understand what really motivates people.
Guinan also has an unusual ability to sense changes in the timeline. She can instinctively tell when something has caused a major alteration, and can feel when something is 'wrong'. In some cases she even knows what happened in parallel timelines, but she does not fully understand these abilities and does not know why or how she knows these things.
It is not clear exactly how old Guinan is -she was alive in 1893, so by 2373 she is at least 480 years old. By the late 24th century, her father is 700 years old. Guinan appears to be a far from typical EI-Aurian. Even as a child, she had an unusual imaginary playmate, a Tarkassian razorbeast. In reality, these creatures are terrifying, particularly when they smile, but the young Guinan felt comforted by the creature.
As Guinan matured, her mother suggested that her temperament was like that of her maternal uncle Terkim, the "family misfit.
"Although she was warned to stay clear of him, Guinan discovered that Terkim was the only member of the family with a sense of humour." She also shares her uncle's dislike of fitting in" and doing the expected.
Guinan seems to have had some disagreements with her family; by 1893, she was living on Earth, ensconced in San Francisco as Madame Guinan, and she was interest in the planet's literary culture and hosted exclusive, invitation-only literary receptions, at least one of which was attended by the renowned author " Mark Twain.
At this point, Guinan dresses in turn of the 19th century costume, but her choice of apparel reflects a style she maintains far into the future: a hat and a flowing garment covering her from the neck down. Curiously, it is in old San Francisco that Guinan first meets Captain Picard and the Enterprise's senior crew after they journey back in time to thwart a group of Devidians who are travelling through time to prey on humans before they develop advanced
technology.
Guinan's willingness to help the Enterprise crew lands her in a cave beneath San Francisco, where she is injured during an exchange with the Devidians. The strength of Picard's relationship with her in his own time is demonstrated when he decides to stay to look after her. When they meet again in the 24th century, Guinan does not tell her friends about this meeting, because she recognizes the importance of protecting the timeline.
As the years pass, Guinan is married at least once and gives birth to several children, one of which turns out to be a troublesome child who "refused to listen." Guinan takes advantage of her incredibly long lifespan to develop impressive skills with the phaser and learns to master various other sports including fencing.
Guinan is one of the few El-Aurians who is not on her home world when the Borg assimilate it in 2265. The attack leaves the EI-Aurian people all but erased. Guinan is deeply scarred by what happens to her people, and develops an abiding hatred of the Borg
In 2293, Guinan, and other EI-Aurian survivors are on two transport ships that are drawn into a deadly space phenomenon - an energy ribbon portal to another continuum called the Nexus. In the Nexus, a person's innermost desires become real and Guinan
experiences a feeling she later describes as being "wrapped in joy." However, her time there is extremely short; a transporter beam rips her out of the Nexus seconds before her ship, the S.S.Lakul, is torn apart by the energy ribbon's gravimetric forces. Guinan finds it difficult to forget her experience in the Nexus, but she eventually manages to put it in her past. However, an 'echo' of her remains there.
At some point in the 24th century, Guinan meets Captain Picard again. The details of their meeting have never been made public, but it is clear that Guinan never forgives the Borg for what they did to her people. She advises Picard to kill Hugh, but soon realizes she is wrong.
Years later, in 2365, Picard recruits Guinan to work on the Enterprise in the Ten-Forward lounge, the social focal point for off duty personnel, serving beverages, desserts, and advice. Guinan's quarters are on Deck 8, Room 3150. Her decor is far from Starfleet standard. The bulkheads are covered in elegant draperies; her bed is large, blue, circular, and decorated with a dozen pillows. Candles cover virtually every flat surface and softly illuminate the room. She is also assigned a small, utilitarian office located a few doors down from Ten-Forward.
When Guinan first comes aboard the Enterprise at Nestoriel III, she
rouses everyone's curiosity. She is bemused by the speculation, but
volunteers nothing to counteract the gossip. The crew is soon drawn to her serenity, and it becomes almost impossible to imagine the ship without her.
