A TRILL IN STARFLEET

SCIENCE OFFICER

A Trill in Starfleet

Jadzia wished to be part of the Trill symbiont program. Her hopes were dashed when she was given a harsh rejection by Curzon Dax, but this determined young woman re-examined what she wanted out of life, won several scholarships, and joined Starfleet Academy in 2359. After four year hard work, Jadzia changed from being a quiet, shy, young woman into a courage's Starfleet officer who knew exactly what she wanted. She received premier distinctions in her exobiology, zoology, astrophysics, and archaeology academic degrees, and re-applied to become a Trill host . She was finally successful, at the age of 26  in becoming host for the Dax symbiont.

Jadzia's Starfleet career was often affected by her status as a joined Trill. As Curzon was also a Starfleet officer, Jadzia came to the job with more experience and knowledge than most officers twice her age. She remembers first hand what it is like to serve on a variety of different ships, and remembers the part Curzon played in some of the earliest peace negotiations with the Klingons. It is a difficult position, but she copes admirably. Shortly after arriving at the station Deep Space Nine, there are allegations of murder levelled against her previous host, Curzon Dax, by the son of the alleged victim. Jadzia's colleagues are obviously concerned that she was being asked to answer charges made against a man who they would consider had died some time before. They find it hard to understand why she was prepared to stand trial, and do everything they can to defend her until the charges were dropped.

Jadzia was a  brilliant young woman, who worked her way up through the ranks from ensign to commander, combined with the life experiences of seven others, including Curzon, a distinguished Starfleet ambassador. Shortly after her 'joining; Jadzia is assigned the position of science officer on Deep Space Nine. During that time, she is involved in some extraordinary adventures. Deep Space Nine is no exception, but the mixture of Federation personnel. Bajoran militia, such as Chief of Security Odo and Major Kira  Nerys, and freely operating agents such as the Cardassians and Ferengi, is not harmonious at first. It takes time for Jadzia to adjust to this assignment, her hard work soon win her admiration from all sides, especially for the part she plays in the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole. As her duty station in Ops is directly adjacent to Kira , the women soon became close friends. The rigorous fitness regime Jadzia follows using Klingon  callisthenics ensures she is in fine physical condition. Jadzia was a professional officer who knew not to let her relationship with, and subsequent marriage to, her colleague Worf affect her Starfleet duties.

She also enjoyed a special friendship with Dr. Julian Bashir, and Quark. During this dark period in Federation history, Jadzia was faced with the arrival of hundreds of Jem 'Hadar ships through the wormhole. Captain Sisko decides to mine it, and Jadzia helps formulate the plan. Facing almost certain death to deploy the mines, her strength of character is once again in evidence. Jadzia is constantly working under war conditions, attacking Dominion forces at every opportunity. She even helps crew a stolen Jem'Hadar  Attack Cruiser. Jadzia proves to be a fearless warrior, working at her best under impossible conditions. Despite the best efforts of Dax and her Starfleet colleagues, however, Captain Sisko is forced to evacuate personnel from Deep Space Nine later that year, following continued threats from the Dominion and their allies.

Jadzia forms part of the crew that breaks through Dominion ranks, and re-takes Deep Space Nine, a major turning point in the ongoing war. Jadzia returns to Deep Space Nine, but the war is far from over. One of her most dangerous missions was, when she accompanies her husband, Worf, on a mission to rescue a Cardassian double agent. Journeying to the jungles of the planet Soukara, the newly weds run into Jem'Hadar forces; although they manage to kill the patrol, Jadzia is shot, and badly injured. Her commitment to Starfleet is once again illustrated when she insists Worf continue with the mission, leaving her to suffer a certain death. As a Starfleet-officer Worf is compelled to carry out his mission, but but not this time, as a husband, he chooses instead to save the woman he loves.

Toward the end of 2374, Starfleet Command decides to take the offensive in the Dominion war. Sisko leads an invasion force to Cardassia, leaving Jadzia in charge of Deep Space Nine, with tragic consequences. When Gul Dukat decides to put his plan to drive the Prophets from the worm hole into action, he releases a Pah-wraith, and becomes possessed by its power. Dukat materializes in Deep Space Nine's Bajoran shrine, and fatally wounds Jadzia while she tries to protect a sacred Orb of the Prophets. Bashir is unable to save Jadzia's life, but the Dax symbiont does survive. Its association with Starfleet, and Deep Space Nine, is far from over. Jadzia's friends help the new Dax host, a young Starfleet counsellor named Ezri to understand her previous hosts. All of Jadzia's Starfleet experiences will be with Dax, ensuring that Jadzia will never be forgotten.

SCIENCE OFFICER

Jadzia Dax is a dedicated science officer, because for her it is not just a job. She enjoys her work and, when in command of Ops on the night shift rotation, she often combines her love of science with her duties by searching for anomalies in nearby space. During her service to Starfleet, the Trill's scientific talents are often stretched and challenged beyond her limits. Dax helps to save the life of her fellow colleague Chief Miles O'Brien, who is experiencing a series of time shifts after being exposed to delta series radio isotopes. The science officer realizes that O'Brien's condition is being aggravated by low level tetryon emissions from a nearby Romulan vessel.

Science is not Dax's only speciality, as she proves in the year that heralds the arrival of a Klingon Starfleet officer who will have a tremendous impact on her life: Lt. Commander Worf. The knowledge of Klingon culture accrued by Curzon, the Dax's symbiont previous host, proves invaluable to Commander Benjamin Sisko during a time of high tension between the Klingons and the Federation. Jadzia becomes a sympathetic ally to Worf, the station's newly appointed strategic operations officer.

Later Jadzia receives a promotion to lieutenant commander, in recognition of her high standard of work, knowledge of Starfleet regulations, and effectiveness as a science officer. On a subsequent mission with the Klingon Empire, Dax temporarily takes up the post of science officer to the I.K.S. Rotarran, combining her intensive knowledge of Klingon customs with her highly efficient Starfleet training in a search for a crippled Klingon ship, the B'Moth. Jadzia helps the demoralized Klingons to reach a turning point in their fight against the Jem'Hadar.

Her skills helps clear Odo of a murder charge. The science officer discovers that his 'victim,' Ihudan, is in fact a clone, grown to frame the Changeling. but the flight plan is altered by the alternate Odo and they escape, while the colony is erased from existence. Jadzia feels the whole situation has been created by her mistake, and the guilt of her actions weighs heavily upon her for sometime.

With the new leader of the Cardassian government making overtures for peace, even though the Dominion war rages on, Jadzia is able to concentrate on her scientific endeavours. She journeys to investigate a rare subspace phenomenon with Chief O'Brien and Dr. Julian Bashir aboard the Runabout U.S.S. Rubicon on Stardate 51474. On entering the anomaly, the ship is reduced in size to around 10 centimetres long and its crew are unable to prevent Jem'Hadar forces capturing the Defiant, to which the Runabout ‘s tethered. In a highly dangerous attempt to stop the Dominion from repairing the Defiant's warp drive, Jadzia pilots the tiny ship inside the vessel and helps Sisko stall for time, successfully preventing the Dominion from seizing the ship. None the worse for her miniaturization, Jadzia and the crew regain their normal size after being returned to the anomaly.

Jadzia's bravery and her passion for science go hand in hand. She has often used her skills to save her friends, no matter what the cost to herself. It is ironic, then, that her own fate is determined by a source very different from science. Jadzia's death is ultimately caused by an ancient Bajoran spirit, known as a Pah-wraith. Dax first encounters one of these malevolent entities when strange events occur in the wormhole and powerful energy is released from an ancient Bajoran artifact. Jadzia witnesses her friend, Benjamin Sisko, wrestling with his role as a Starfleet captain and his position as Emissary to the religious Bajorans. The situation worsens when an evil Pah-wraith, the spirit of a force banished from Bajor's Celestial Temple, is released onto the station. Jadzia and Dr. Bashir invent a radiation panel which should remove the creature from the possessed Jake Sisko, but the station commander overrides them and allows the spirit fight between Kira and his son to continue. Eventually, Jadzia's rig is activated by Kai Winn, and the conflict is brought to an abrupt end.

The appearance of the Pah-wraiths will later have tragic consequences for Jadzia, as she is murdered by a Pah-wraith-possessed Gul Dukat the following year.

DAX AND WORF

The marriage between Worf, and Jadzia Dax is full of conflict, passion and laughter. The wedding ceremony is held on board Deep Space Nine, and involves full Klingon pomp and ceremony but, even prior to this, there are problems. Sirella, Mistress of the House of Martok, orders many gruelling tasks for Jadzia before granting her permission to marry into the house; at one point frustrated and exhausted, Jadzia decides not to go through with the wedding. Eventually, with the advice of her good friend, Captain Benjamin Sisko, Dax realizes that, above all, shewants to marry Worf. She makes peace with Sirella.

Once married, some things change between the unusual couple, but many do not. The couple battle each other in a holosuite program with bat'leths, a pastime they enjoy, even though it can result in bruises and broken bones; they both enjoy the rough and tumble. The newlyweds appear to enjoy inviting people to their quarters for dinner. Onone occasion, Jadzia asks Kira and a date to join them. On a mission to the Badlands, Jadzia is gravely injured, and Worf is torn between loyalty to his wife, finish the mission. He chooses to save Jadzia. even though it may cost him a future command. Worf and Dax share their working lives, as well as their home lives. At times, they are called upon to accept missions together, and this can afford the opportunity for fun.

Working on dangerous missions together can also lead to problems. When Worf and Jadzia are sent into the Badlands to rendezvous with a Cardassian spy, Lasaran, they must risk their lives to bring the man out of a jungle on a planet the Soukara system. Jadzia is seriously injured, but urges Worf to continue with the Mission. He agrees, as duty must take precedence, but, with the thought of his wife bleeding to death haunting him, he turns back, effectively sentencing the Cardassian to death. This incident has repercussions. Captain Sisko tells Worf that his decision will be included on his service record, and he will probably never get a command of his own, but the strength of the bond between the Klingon and Trill is too strong. Worf knows he would do the same thing again; for this reason, he and Dax are never again sent on the same mission. Worf tells the recovering Dax that his pledge to her overrules any other, including those made to Starfleet. It is a testament to their love.

The pair have not been married long before Jadzia and Worf consider having children, which may not be an easy process for a Klingon and a joined Trill. Never the less, Jadzia obtains an ovarian resequencing enzyme treatment from Dr. Bashir; the treatment appears to be successful, and as Jadzia gives thanks at the Bajoran shrine on Deep Space Nine Tragically, Jadzia is attacked by the insane Cardassian Gul Dukat, and the Pah-wraith that has possessed him. Later, with Worf by her side, Jadzia whispers that they would have had a beautiful baby, and dies. Worf is devastated by the loss of his wife; they were married less than a year. The depth of his love is demonstrated once more when he embarks on a mission to ensure Jadzia's spirit a place in the Klingon after life, Sto-Vo-Kor they had been married less than a year
