In 2369 Kira Kerys was born to Kira
Taban and Kira Meru this was during the occupation of Bajor by the Cardassians.
She has two younger brothers, Pohl. and Reon. Bajoran people had a
caste system Kira’s would have been of the artistic caste. In fact; Meru was a
painter from Dahkur Province. Later, Nerys recalls that she did not have the
family trait; she was even unable to paint as a child.
Kira Nerys her Early Life
Nerys has few memories of this time.
As she grew up, Nerys believed , that her mother died of malnutrition at
the refugee camp. Her father, who let her believe this story,
claimed that Meru was the bravest woman he knew.
Then came the time the family were able to leave the 'refugee camp, and return
to their home in the Dahkur Province where Taban's status ensured that her
family were given decent shelter and good food. Taban loved his wife all the
more for her noble sacrifice, Meru remained
a comfort woman to the Cardassians for seven years,
before dying in a Cardassian hospital.
Nerys does not discover the truth about her mother until she travels back to the past via the Bajoran "Orb of Time" and learns of her mother's close relationship with Gul Dukat the Prefect of Bajor. This proves to be a hard truth for Nerys to take she has always despised those Bajorans who collaborated with the Cardassians during the occupation. Eventually she comes to terms with her mother's dark past, accepting that Meru acted out of love for her children. Dukat made sure her family were fed and treat well while in the refugee camp.
Kira Nerys was recruited into the
Shakaar resistance cell at the age, of 12, and fought alongside the group until
the Cardassians withdrew. She
proved to be a fearless freedom fighter, taking on any challenge. She also
deeply loved her father, he was her source of strength. When
Taban was wounded in a confrontation with the Cardassians, he was brought
to the resistance base. Nerys spent hours at his
side watching him die unfortunately she wasn’t with him when he finally died,
she always regrets this. She honours
her father by digging his grave and making sure that it is well tended. Nerys
has no idea where her brothers are.
Growing up, Nerys started to think of her fellow rebels as family; she spend a lot of time with them after the occupation, and they are never far from her thoughts, Nerys becomes romantically involved with freedom fighters Furel and Lupaza. The experience of the occupation shaped them all, these friendships are strong as family bonds on the bloody battlefields of Bajor. She was recruited by Lorit Akrem into the Shakaar resistance group. Soon learning the skills of a terrorist and this would come in handy to free the Bajorans from the grip of the Cardassians.
Nerys proved herself time and again to be a powerful
fighter in the resistance she took on many operations and leadership roles. The
Cardassian tried many times to eliminate the Shakaar resistance group, but
always failed. When the group was disbanded Nerys accepted the rank of
major in the new Bajoran military and is assigned first officer on
"Terok Nor" renamed "Deep Space Nine". Other members of her
group returned to there homes in Dahkur Province and take up there old skills as
farmers, as far Cardassians go Kira’s job is far from over. She remains
faithful to her roots as a former member of the Bajor resistance. She also
thinks the Bajorans should be in control of Terok Nor this at first
conflicts with the new commander of Deep Space Nine; Benjamin Sisko. They
finally work together as a dynamic team.
Once a Bajoran freedom fighter during the Cardassian occupation of her home-world, Major Kira Nerys is now Captain Benjamin Sisko's second-in-command and is Starfleet's liaison with the Bajoran government aboard Deep Space Nine. Kira takes her duties to her people very seriously.
A survivor of the Signha Refugee Camp. and an active rebel
from a young age, she has fought fiercely for her people's unique and spiritual
way of life, she is attracted to Vedek Bareil, a member of the Vedek Assembly,
the influential congress of Bajoran spiritual leaders. Bareil respects both his
people and their faith in the Prophets and the Celestial Temple, When Kira meets
Bareil, a tall handsome, intelligent man. His calm demeanour, and unwavering
faith that he is on the path the Prophets haven chosen for him provide a nice
counterpart to Kira's often fiery temperament, and her anger about Bajor joining
the Federation. She is struggling with what Bajor is evolving into, and the
ideal she clung to during the occupation is proving to be confusing. With Bareil.
Kira perhaps finds a stable influence, as well as a love. It is Bajor's future
that brings the two together and which will, ultimately, tear them apart.
Kira and Bareil meet for the first time, when the Vedek comes to Deep Space Nine following the destructton of the station's school by a Bajoran religious group; they object to the secular teaching. The encounter with Major Kira moves Bareil, for he returns to the station later and demonstrates his interest in her. Kira responds to his advances and they form an intimate relationship, there is some conflict between them when they disagree about Bajor's path. This is hauntingly clear when it comes to Kira's attention that Bareil may have been a Cardassian collaborator during the occupation. Crushed, and betrayed; she realizes she knows Bareil too well to believe that he could have ever betrayed his own people. She uncovers the truth, but too late to prevent Bareil from losing the election to Kai Winn. He promises every thing is as the Prophets willed it. It seems inevitable, though, that Bajor will come between the lovers.
When Bareil is seriously injured while trying to help conduct a final peace settlement with the Cardassians, his life hangs by a thread. He insists that he must continue to participate in the negotiations, even if it means loosing his life. Kira understands his dedication but she fears it will kill him. Bareil continues to advise Kai Winn on the details of the treaty as his body slowly and very painfully gives in, Nerys stands by, helpless to prevent his suffering and to stop him working on the treaty.
Winn insists only Bareil can accomplish the treaty, and
it will end years of arguments between the Bajorans and their former
Cardassian oppressors, Kira knows this, and wants the treaty to succeed but it
is tearing her apart to watch what is happening to the man who brought laughter
and love back into her life. Bareil doesn't survive his ordeal, but the treaty
is signed by both sides. Unconscious Bareil, in the last hours of his life. Kira
whispers all the things she never told him. Bareil helped heal his people, and
guided them toward a brighter future. She now faces a future Without him. It is
with perhaps more optimism than she's ever felt. Bareil's faith in the Prophets
has strengthened hers, and his abiding love for her has healed many of her
wounds. Nerys will carry Bareil's spirit with her always.
