Captain Decker is not impressed having his ship taken from him, but he soon comes to respect Kirk. and along with Spock and the crew set out to clear up the mystery.

All we know about it, is it now 53.4 hours away from Earth. The Enterprise is the only Star Ship standing in its way. We assume there is a vessel in the heart of the cloud. Our orders are to intercept and investigate and take whatever action that is necessary and possible. We can only hope there is a life form on board that reasons as we do.
On Vulcan I began to sensing a consciousness from a source, more powerful than I
have encountered , thought patterns, of exactingly perfect order, I believe they are
emanating from the intruder ,I believe it may hold my answers.
Curious I am seeing moons planets, stars , whole galaxies, it could be a representation of Vger's entire journey, but who or what are we dealing with? Captain I am now conscious all of this is Vger, that we are inside a living machine, I must try and mind meld with it, Vger's purpose is to find its creator, and join with it, that is how it will survive a machine planet , sending a machine to Earth looking for its creator.
I saw Vgers planet, a planet populated by living machines, Unbelievable technology ,
but with all of its pure logic Vger is barren , cold, no history, no beauty. I should have
known. Spock what should you have known? Jim this simple feeling is beyond
Vgers comprehension, no meaning, no hope , no answers, it is asking questions, is this
all that I am is there nothing more?
I weep for Vger as I would a brother as I was
when I came aboard, so is Vger now, empty incomplete and searching , logic and
knowledge are not enough .
Kirk: Vger we are the creators!, we will make it possible to complete your programming , only the creator could do this, the creator must join with Vger.
Spock: Vger has reached the limit of its knowledge , what it asks of its creator is there nothing more? this machine wants to join with a human,
Kirk: Spock did we just see the beginning of a new life form I think we gave it the ability , to create its own sense of purpose, and the drive that compels us to over come them,
Bones: and a lot of foolish human emotions Mr. Spock. Spock: Yes and it will have to deal with them as well
