HIKARU SULU STARFLEET CAREER
Hikaru Sulu was born on Earth in San Francisco 2237. He in
fact lived quite close to Starfleet Academy. Between 2265 -2290 Sulu serves with
great distinction as a Physicist at first, moving to Senior Helm Officer aboard
the USS Enterprise NCC- 1701 many years pass and then he is given command
of his own ship USS
Excelsior NCC-2000. On The Enterprise Sulu was often in command while senior
officers left the bridge on away missions. He went on many away missions
himself, some of which were in extremely dangerous and difficult conditions, one
of these missions he nearly froze to death with a landing party, when the
Enterprise can not get them back on board. His sense of humour helped him
survive this ordeal. 2290 Hikaru Sulu takes Command of his own ship USS Excelsior
NCC-2000 a prototype exploration ship, among his crew is a young Vulcan science
officer called Tuvok,, and an old friend Janice Rand who serves as
communications officer. It seems that Hikaru Sulu Spends most of his adult life in Starfleet. A
portrait of him hangs in Starfleet headquarters in honour of his contribution to
space exploration. The honour is well deserved by a great officer, one of
Starfleet’s finest. Showing his intelligence, humour, and a great deal of
loyalty and courage.
Hikaru Sulu has had a very distinguished career as a
scientist, bridge officer, a teacher, and the captain of a vessel of
exploration, he has a great sense of humour, also he finds time for many hobbies
and interests. He sponsored a young Chakotay into the Starfleet Academy.
The Enterprise’s mission of exploration offer Sulu the
opportunity to have many interests while serving on board, he has a fascination
of Botany, and he is allowed the use of the facilities on board to grow exotic
plants, one of these plants is called Gertrude however Yeoman Rand insists it is
a
male plant because it reacts strangely in her company, she
suggests "Beauregard" would be a better name for it. The activities he
enjoys are collecting antique weapons, fencing, hiking, and martial arts.Sulu has a daughter born in the early 70’s called Demora
she followed in her fathers footsteps and also joins Starfleet, and also
serves on board the USS Enterprise NCC -1701B.
His loyalty to his friends is legend and when Dr. McCoy and
Captain Kirk are sent to the penal colony of Rura Penthe he plays a big part in
rescue and also reveals against orders the location of the Khitomer Peace
Conference, this allows Kirk to prevent the assassination of the Federation
President, this ensures the peace talks will continue. He has to battle an old
adversary "Kang" and the Klingon battle Cruiser. Sulu Ignites the gases in
the nebula, and this allows him to head to the conference just in time to assist
Kirk.
SULU: LIEUTENANT TO CAPTAIN OF THE EXCELSIOR
Despite the number of years Sulu spends on the Enterprise and the charges filed against him for participating in the rescue of Spock from the Genesis Planet; Starfleet still sees the commander as a candidate for a ship of his own.
Hikaru
Sulu rises from physicist to the helm officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise to his
own command of the U.S.S. Excelsior NCC-2000. At the time, the ship is one of
the most advanced in Starfleet, and Sulu proves himself to be an excellent
captain. Under his command, the vessel, which is the prototype for its class, is
commissioned for regular service as a deep space exploration vessel. Among his
crew is young science officer Tuvok, who later serves on the U.S.S. Voyager, and
an old friend from the Enterprise, Janice Rand, who serves as his communications
officer.
Sulu excels as a captain, Sulu gained early experience of command during his time on the Enterprise, captain Kirk often left him in command while he visited the planet's surface. By the time he is becomes captain of the Excelsior, he is a veteran who is confident in his ability to deal with almost anything space has to throw at him. Sulu has a relaxed command style, and insists that anyone serving on his ship, even the Vulcan Tuvok, develops a sense of humour.
Like his mentor Captain Kirk, Sulu
is not a 'by the book' officer. Experience has taught him that in order to
achieve the best results, it is often important to bend the rules a little.
Captains are often out of touch with Starfleet for long periods of time and have
a great deal of discretion. Sulu is certainly not above lying to his superiors
if he feels that the circumstances justify his actions.
Sulu explains some of his command philosophy when Ensign Tuvok questions his decision to disobey orders and mount a rescue attempt for Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy, who have been imprisoned by the Klingons. He admits Tuvok is right to quote regulations Sulu says that there is much more to command than blindly following orders and directives. He has a strong sense of morality and loyalty, and there are times throughout his career when he allows these to take precedence over the dictates of the Federation.
Despite all his years in Starfleet, Sulu is shocked when the U.S.S. Excelsior monitors the explosion of the Klingon moon Praxis. He has to use all of his vast experience to protect his ship from the massive shockwave. Sulu reports the destruction of the Klingon moon to Starfleet. A Klingon, Federation peace initiative is launched. When Kirk and McCoy are arrested, Sulu sets course for Qo'noS to attempt a rescue mission , knowing only to well the trouble this s action will cause, Sulu orders a course through the Azure Nebula which will conceal the Excelsiors approach. He also plays a vital role in the events leading up to the Khitomer peace conference, which establishes the foundation for peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire.

Sulu even finds time to have a
family; his daughter, Demora was born during the early 2270's she follows in her
father's footsteps. She is assigned to the helm of the new U.S.S. Enterprise
NCC-1701-B. She is on board when the legendary captain Kirk is killed. When the
Nexus ribbon hits the ship; he saved their lives. Sulu's own career in Starfleet
spans an extremely long period. Captain Sulu can be found patrolling the
Cardassian border in 2350, Sulu spends most of his life in Starfleet he was over
113 years old at this time.He was an officer who represents the finest
traditions of Starfleet, while at the same time employing a blend of
intelligence, humour, and courage.
Uhura Communications Officer on USS Enterprise NCC-1701and 1701A
Uhura
was born in the United States of Africa on Earth in 2239. She joined Starfleet
Academy in 2257 and graduated in four years later. she was commissioned was the
Enterprise by 2266. Uhura's name is derived from the Swahili word 'uhuru', which
means freedom, and she has a strong sense of her cultural heritage. She speaks
Swahili as easily as she does English. Her quarters are decorated with African artefacts
including urns and statues.
Uhura spends almost a life time serving Captain James T Kirk and the Starship Enterprise. A member of the bridge crew and is senior communications officer, her work is ship to ship communications, she also assists Kirk by constantly monitoring Starfleet, listening to transmissions, unscrambling coded messages and sorts out sub space chatter. She alerts the captain of any hails from Starfleet, or of any distress calls. Her role means she is usually the first one that will hear from life forms that have never been encountered by Starfleet.
Uhura is responsible for keeping records of which Starfleet secure
frequencies have been cracked by enemy races. Long before communication badges
Uhura had to locate members of the crew by using the intercom system. From her
console she can also gather information on the area in which the Enterprise is
travelling
Her landing party duties are directly linked into her bridge work, her varied communication skills are very useful in diplomatic missions. Wearing the red scant uniform of the engineering department Uhura has a background in sciences and linguistics, she is never afraid to admit when she is lost for words, and has had to resort to printed matter to have the correct greeting. She also fully understands the equipment she uses.
Uhura is well respected by her friends and other Starfleet officers for the many away missions in which she has participated . The respect she generated stands her in good stead during the days when she was an instructor at the Starfleet Academy, where she prepares students for the communication skills required for the Kobayashi Maru training Scenario.
No Matter how dedicated to her job she is she
lays it all on the line for her friends when she helps commandeer
the Enterprise to help to save the life of her dearest friend Captain Spock .
During this unauthorised mission the Enterprise 1701 is lost for ever in a
daring attempt to save all of there lives Kirk sacrifices it. Kirk manages to
acquire a Klingon Bird-of-prey, Uhura manages to work out the new consoles and
read the instruments, she determines that one of the signals coming in is in
fact a distress signal from Starfleet and they have a situation on earth
that needs the daring crew to help them out "once again".
Uhura is often found in the recreation Room entertaining the crew, she has a wonderful voice and also plays Spock's Vulcan harp, she has a strong fondness for Scotty in her later career, and has a strong sense of humour and of duty likes to teasing her crew mates even Mr. Spock making up a song about him . She is a great dancer and this comes in handy, when Kirk asks her if she would distract Sybok's troops on Nimbus III. In 2267 her singing does get her into trouble when the Nomad probe decides singing serves no purpose and wipes her memory completely.
She is among a close circle of Kirk's most trusted officers at this point in her career; and her suggestion is acted upon immediately. Her captain knows that while she is an excellent communications officer, her abilities in other areas are just as impressive. She is a dedicated and skilful officer, an asset to any ship on which she serves. After the Enterprise completes Kirk's first five year mission, Uhura accepts a promotion to lieutenant commander and stays onboard under the command of Captain Willard Decker, who supervises the Enterprise's 18 month refit. During the V'Ger crisis she is pleased when Kirk resumes command of the ship.
On One occasion she puts the Enterprise in great danger ,
when she is given a "Tribble" by Cyrano Jones who is rather taken with
her, this little animal within hours just about over runs the Enterprise getting
into the engines and the food dispensers .Uhura has enormous faith in Captain
Kirk and is willing to take great risks with him and the other members of her
crew. She risks court martial on at least two occasions once when retrieving
Spock's body from the Genesis planet, and the other when the Enterprise rescues
Kirk and McCoy from Rura Penthe . As a veteran she earns an impressive
reputation as a space veteran by her younger colleagues
She
keeps records of any official business done over subspace channels. She alerts
the captain when the Enterprise is being hailed with distress calls and with
diplomatic conversations, and when the ships sends out such messages of its own,
she is the one who releases them. Her role means that she is often the first to
receive and transmit communications from life forms that have never before been
encountered by Starfleet. She has a background in sciences and linguistics, but
she is never afraid to admit when she is at a loss for words, and she willingly
searches through old-fashioned, printed translation dictionaries for the perfect
greeting and in some cases get the crew out of trouble.
It is noted in her medical records that even as a child she showed promise in mathematics and science. She understands the science behind the equipment she uses, Uhura is well respected by the her colleagues and other Starfleet officers for the many adventures in which she has participated. The respect she generates stands her in good stead during her days as an instructor at Starfleet Academy, where she is a fine teacher preparing students for their communications duties
